Updated:
Ilinden–Exochi is a smaller Bulgaria–Greece crossing about 20 km south of Gotse Delchev. It is the shortest way from the Mesta valley to Drama, Kavala and the Thassos ferry, and avoids the Kresna gorge and Kulata. Since 2025 there are no routine Schengen checks. A private transfer from Gotse Delchev to Thessaloniki costs 145 € per vehicle.
Who this crossing is for
If you are travelling from Sofia to Thessaloniki, Kulata is usually the better choice. Ilinden–Exochi makes sense when your journey starts in the south-west of Bulgaria or ends in eastern Macedonia in Greece. That includes travellers from Bansko, Razlog and Gotse Delchev, and anyone heading for Kavala, the Thassos ferry at Keramoti, or the beaches east of Kavala.
| Starting point | Going to | Better crossing | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gotse Delchev | Drama or Kavala | Ilinden – Exochi | Much shorter, no detour west |
| Bansko or Razlog | Kavala or Thassos ferry | Ilinden – Exochi | Stays in the Mesta valley |
| Gotse Delchev | Thessaloniki | Either | Similar distance; check road conditions |
| Sofia | Thessaloniki or Halkidiki | Kulata | Motorway on the Greek side |
| Sofia | Kavala | Usually Kulata | Faster roads, despite more kilometres |
The route
From Gotse Delchev, the road runs south through the village of Ilinden to the border. On the Greek side, it descends past Exochi through hilly, wooded country to Drama, which is roughly 60 km from the border. From Drama, Kavala is about 35 km further, and the Egnatia motorway connects onward to Thessaloniki in the west or Xanthi in the east.
| Leg | Approx. distance | Approx. time |
|---|---|---|
| Gotse Delchev – border | about 20 km | 25 min |
| Border – Drama | about 60 km | 1 h |
| Drama – Kavala | about 35 km | 35 min |
| Gotse Delchev – Thessaloniki via Drama | about 200 km | 2 h 45 min – 3 h |
The Greek section is a mountain road with bends and few overtaking places. It is fine in a car or minivan, but slower than the distance suggests, and it can be affected by snow in winter.
What happens at the border
Bulgaria and Greece are both in the Schengen area, and land border checks between them were lifted on 1 January 2025, according to the European Commission. You pass the old checkpoint at low speed. Police can still make occasional checks, so carry your passport or ID card, and any consent documents for children; our children’s documents checklist explains what they need.
Getting to Gotse Delchev
From Sofia, the road goes south on the Struma motorway to Simitli, then east over the Predela saddle to Razlog and down the Mesta valley to Gotse Delchev. That is about 200 km and around 3 hours. In winter the Predela pass and the road south of Bansko need care.
Another option from the Struma valley is the road from Sandanski over the Popovi Livadi pass to Gotse Delchev. It is shorter on the map but narrow and slow, and in winter it is often best avoided.
When to use Kulata instead
- You are starting in Sofia and going to Thessaloniki or Halkidiki.
- You are travelling in heavy snow and want the main road.
- You are travelling at night and prefer motorway on the Greek side.
- You want the most predictable timing for a flight from Thessaloniki.

If you are catching the Thassos ferry from Keramoti or Kavala, check the ferry timetable first and work backwards; the road time from Gotse Delchev is the easy part to predict.
