Is the Shipka Pass open in winter?

Updated:

Usually yes. The Shipka Pass, on the main road between Kazanlak and Gabrovo, is maintained through the winter, but heavy snow and ice can slow traffic or close it temporarily, and heavy vehicles are often restricted. If you are travelling from Sofia to Kazanlak, you do not need the pass at all. A private transfer from Sofia to Kazanlak costs 180 € per vehicle.

What the Shipka Pass is

The pass crosses the central Balkan range at about 1,150 metres, linking the Rose Valley around Kazanlak in the south with Gabrovo and Veliko Tarnovo in the north. It is one of the main north–south road links in the country, and it passes the Shipka Memorial on the way. The road is winding and climbs steeply on both sides.

How to check before you travel

Bulgaria’s Road Infrastructure Agency (API) publishes information on the condition of the national road network, including restrictions on mountain passes. The traffic police also publish road information. Check on the morning of travel, not the day before, because conditions change quickly in the mountains.

  1. Check the weather forecast for Kazanlak and Gabrovo.
  2. Look at road status notices from the API on the day of travel.
  3. Check a live traffic map for queues on the approach to the pass.
  4. If in doubt, choose the route that avoids the pass rather than waiting to see.

Routes that avoid Shipka

Which alternative makes sense depends on where you are going. In many cases, you can avoid a mountain pass completely by using the motorways around the range.

JourneyVia ShipkaWinter alternative
Sofia – KazanlakNot neededThrough Karlovo along the valley, or Trakia motorway and Stara Zagora
Plovdiv – Veliko TarnovoVia Kazanlak and GabrovoTrakia to Sofia and Hemus north, or east via Sliven; longer but lower
Stara Zagora – GabrovoDirectHainboaz (Republika) pass to the east, or the long way round via Sofia
Plovdiv – VarnaVia Shipka and Veliko TarnovoTrakia motorway via Burgas

Other Balkan passes, such as Hainboaz and the Troyan Pass, are also mountain roads and can have similar or worse winter conditions. The genuinely safe winter alternative is usually a longer route on motorways or along valleys.

From Sofia to Kazanlak

Kazanlak is south of the Balkan range, so from Sofia the road follows the valley east through Karlovo, or you can take the Trakia motorway to Stara Zagora and turn north. Either way you stay below the mountains. The valley route is about 200 km and around 2 h 45 min; the motorway route is longer but faster in places.

Planning a north–south trip in winter

  • Start in daylight, and plan to be off any mountain section before dark.
  • Build in at least an hour of margin for anything time-critical, such as a flight.
  • Expect slower progress near Gabrovo and Kazanlak even when the pass is open.
  • Consider an overnight stop rather than a long winter drive in one go.

For other routes affected by winter, see Sofia to Vidin, which crosses the Petrohan Pass, and Trakia or Hemus for the coast. Our guide to stops between Sofia and Varna covers a northern route that avoids the passes entirely.

Cars on Bulgarian roads must be suitably equipped for winter conditions. On a private transfer, your part is to allow extra time.
