The border at Gyueshevo–Deve Bair

This is the main road crossing between Bulgaria and North Macedonia for Sofia traffic. Unlike the borders with Greece and Romania, it is an external Schengen border, so every passenger is checked on the way out of Bulgaria and again entering North Macedonia, and the reverse on the way back.

Queues are usually short on weekdays but can build at weekends, on public holidays in either country, and in summer when diaspora traffic is heavy. The crossing sits on a mountain pass, so in winter fog and snow can slow the approach on both sides.

Entry/Exit System for non-EU travellers

Since 6 January 2026 Bulgaria has applied the EU Entry/Exit System at Gyueshevo and its other land crossings, and the system has been fully operational across the Schengen area since 10 April 2026. Non-EU nationals, including British and American visitors, have their fingerprints and a facial image recorded the first time they enter, instead of a passport stamp. The first registration takes longer; later entries need only a face check. EU citizens are not registered.

For more on how it works at land borders, see our Entry/Exit System guide.

Documents

  • A valid passport for every traveller, including children. Some EU nationals can enter North Macedonia with a national ID card; check our article on entering Serbia or North Macedonia with an ID card before you rely on one.
  • Visa rules depend on your nationality. Check the North Macedonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs well before travel if you are not an EU, UK or US citizen.
  • If a child travels with only one parent or with other adults, carry a notarised consent letter from the absent parent.

Other ways to travel

Coaches run between Sofia and Skopje and are the cheapest choice for one person. Check the current departures with the operators or at Sofia Central Bus Station. There is no practical passenger train on this route.

A transfer becomes worthwhile when there are two or more of you, when you need to reach Skopje airport at a fixed time, or when you want to go straight on to Lake Ohrid. Our guide to Sofia to Ohrid covers that longer trip.

If you are flying out of Skopje, plan to reach the airport, which lies south-east of the city near Petrovec, at least two hours before departure and add an hour of border margin on top of the drive.

Alternative crossing

The Stanke Lisichkovo–Delchevo crossing, east of Blagoevgrad, is useful for south-western Bulgaria but makes the trip from Sofia longer. For Skopje, Gyueshevo remains the obvious route. The Gyueshevo–Deve Bair guide has more detail on the crossing itself.
