Bucharest Otopeni Airport to Golden Sands is about 310 km via Giurgiu, the Danube Bridge, Ruse and Varna, a drive of around 4.5 to 5 hours. A longer route via the A2 motorway and Constanta is about 380 km but mostly motorway. There are no routine border checks between Romania and Bulgaria as of autumn 2026. A private transfer costs 205 € per car.
Why fly into Bucharest for the Bulgarian coast?
Varna Airport, 25 km from Golden Sands, is the obvious gateway, but many of its flights are seasonal and concentrated on certain days. Bucharest has year-round connections from far more cities, including long-haul routes. For travellers from North America or the Middle East, and for anyone whose dates do not match the Varna charter calendar, landing at Otopeni and driving south can be the simplest option.

Via Ruse
The most direct line runs south from the airport to Giurgiu, across the Danube Bridge to Ruse, then east through Razgrad and Shumen to Varna and up the coast to Golden Sands. The Bulgarian section is on two-lane roads with some dual carriageway near Shumen and Varna.
The bridge is the variable. Repair work frequently reduces it to one lane, and on summer Saturdays many Romanian holidaymakers use it to reach the Bulgarian coast. Cars pay a toll on each side, reported in June 2026 at about 15 lei (around €3) in Romania and €2 in Bulgaria. See Ruse to Bucharest for more on the crossing.
Via Constanta
The A2 Sun Motorway runs east from Bucharest to Constanta. From there you follow the coast south past Mangalia, cross at Vama Veche–Durankulak, or turn inland for Negru Voda–Kardam, and continue via Kavarna and Balchik to Golden Sands. The distance is longer but the first two-thirds are on motorway, and it bypasses the Ruse bridge. In peak summer the Romanian coast road around Mangalia can be slow.
Via Silistra and the ferry
A car ferry across the Danube near Calarasi connects with Silistra. It can shorten the route on paper, but it depends on sailing times and river conditions. Our Silistra–Calarasi ferry guide explains how it works.
Border and documents as of autumn 2026
If you arrive at Otopeni from outside Schengen, you pass passport control there, and non-EU nationals are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System, fully operational since 10 April 2026. The road border into Bulgaria is an internal Schengen border, with no routine checks since 1 July 2025. Carry your passport throughout the trip.
