Ruse to Bucharest across the Danube Bridge

Updated:

Ruse to central Bucharest is about 75 km: across the Danube Bridge to Giurgiu, then north on the DN5. With a clear bridge it takes around 1.5 hours; with bridge works or rush-hour traffic in Bucharest it can take 2.5 to 3. Cars pay a toll on each side, and there is no routine border check. A private transfer from Ruse costs 95 € per car.

The Danube Bridge

Opened in 1954, the Danube Bridge between Ruse and Giurgiu was for decades the only fixed crossing between Bulgaria and Romania. It carries road traffic on its upper level and the railway below. Its age shows: maintenance closes one lane for long periods, and both governments have announced repair programmes in recent years.

The toll

Each country charges its own toll for cars. According to figures reported in June 2026, the Romanian side charged 15 lei, roughly €3, and the Bulgarian side around €2. Romania has been introducing an online prepayment system called eTarifGiurgiuPod, with dedicated lanes that open automatically if the fee was paid in advance. If you drive yourself, check the current amounts and payment options just before your trip.

The border as of autumn 2026

Bulgaria and Romania became full Schengen members on land on 1 January 2025. For the first six months both countries kept temporary checks; those ended on 1 July 2025. Today you pass the old border installations without a passport check, but police on both sides can still stop vehicles. Every traveller should carry a passport or national ID card.

Getting to Otopeni airport

Bucharest’s main airport lies on the northern edge of the city, so from Ruse you either cross Bucharest or go around it. Expect around 95 km and 1 h 45 min in normal conditions, and allow a generous margin for the bridge. For a morning flight, an early start from Ruse avoids both the bridge queues and Bucharest’s rush hour.

For a flight from Otopeni, plan to leave Ruse at least 4 hours before departure. That covers the drive, a possible bridge delay and the usual two hours at the airport.

Other ways to cross

  • Train: trains cross the same bridge between Ruse and Bucharest. Check Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) and CFR Calatori for the current timetable; services are infrequent.
  • Minibus and coach: some operators run between Ruse and Bucharest, including to the airport. Check the operators’ websites for current departures.
  • Private transfer: door to door at any hour. A Sedan takes up to 4 passengers and 4 bags, a Minivan up to 6, a Van up to 8. The price is per vehicle.

When the bridge is closed or slow

If the bridge is heavily restricted, there are two alternatives: the Vidin–Calafat bridge far to the west, which only makes sense from north-west Bulgaria, and the car ferry from Silistra towards Calarasi to the east. From Ruse itself, waiting for the bridge is usually still faster than a detour. See our Silistra–Calarasi ferry guide for the eastern option.
