Updated:
Varna to Bucharest is about 275 km via Ruse and the Danube Bridge to Giurgiu, a drive of around 4 hours in normal traffic. The alternative via Dobrich, the Dobrudzha border and the A2 motorway from Constanta is about 370 km and 4.5 to 5 hours, but avoids the bridge. A private transfer from Varna centre costs 205 € per car.
Three routes, one destination
| Route | Approx. distance | Approx. time | Crossing | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Via Ruse | 275 km | About 4 h | Danube Bridge Ruse–Giurgiu (toll) | Shortest; bridge works can cause long queues |
| Via Dobrich and Constanta | 370 km | 4.5 to 5 h | Kardam–Negru Voda or Durankulak–Vama Veche | Motorway A2 from Constanta to Bucharest |
| Via Silistra and the ferry | 270 km plus ferry | Depends on the ferry | Silistra, then car ferry to Calarasi | Useful only if the ferry times suit you |
Via Ruse: the direct line
From Varna the road runs west through Shumen and Razgrad on the I-2 to Ruse, mostly two-lane with some dual carriageway. At Ruse you cross the Danube Bridge into Giurgiu and take the DN5 north to Bucharest. In light traffic this is the quickest way.
The weak point is the bridge itself. It is decades old, and repair work regularly reduces it to one lane with alternating traffic. The toll is charged separately on each side: reported in June 2026 at around €2 on the Bulgarian side and 15 lei, about €3, on the Romanian side. Our Ruse to Bucharest guide covers the crossing in detail.
Via Constanta: longer but steadier
Heading north from Varna through Dobrich, you cross into Romania at Kardam–Negru Voda or on the coast road at Durankulak–Vama Veche. From Constanta, the A2 Sun Motorway runs all the way to Bucharest, crossing the Danube on the Cernavoda bridges.
It adds around 90 km, but the motorway is predictable and there is no bridge toll queue. It is the better choice when the Ruse bridge is under restriction, or when you want to stop on the Romanian coast. Note that the A2 has its own toll at Fetesti–Cernavoda, paid separately from the rovinieta.
Via Silistra and the ferry
From Silistra a car ferry crosses the Danube towards Calarasi, from where a road leads to Bucharest. On paper this is the shortest line, but it depends on ferry departures and the weather on the river. Read our Silistra–Calarasi ferry guide before choosing it.
Borders as of autumn 2026
All three crossings are internal Schengen borders. Bulgaria and Romania joined Schengen fully on 1 January 2025, and the temporary checks kept for six months ended on 1 July 2025. You do not stop for passport control, but you should carry a passport or ID card, as police may still check identity on either side.
- Driving your own car: you need a Bulgarian e-vignette and a Romanian rovinieta, bought online before you set off.
- Travelling in a transfer: the passengers only need their documents.
Going to Otopeni airport for a flight? The airport lies north of Bucharest, so allow extra time for the last stretch around the city, especially between 7:00 and 10:00 and after 16:00 on weekdays.
Planning the day
For an afternoon flight from Bucharest or a meeting in the city, leave Varna early. A 6:00 departure puts you at the Ruse bridge before the mid-morning lorry traffic and in Bucharest before lunch, even with a short coffee stop in Shumen or Razgrad.
Friday afternoons, the eves of public holidays and summer Sundays are the slowest times on the bridge, when Romanian holidaymakers head south to the Bulgarian coast or return home. If your dates fall on one of these, the Constanta route is worth considering even though it is longer on the map.
The booking form lets you choose a Sedan for up to 4 passengers and 4 bags, a Minivan for up to 6 and 6 bags, or a Van for up to 8 and 8 bags, and the price is per vehicle. You can add child seats and book the return at the same time.
