Why Edirne

Edirne is the first Turkish city across the border and a capital of the Ottoman Empire before Istanbul. Its centrepiece, the Selimiye Mosque by the architect Sinan, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The covered bazaars, the Old Mosque, riverside walks along the Tundzha and Meric, and the local fried liver all draw visitors from Plovdiv and further afield.

Many Bulgarians also go for shopping: textiles, household goods and food. If that is your plan, read up on what you can bring back before you go, because customs allowances apply on return. Our guide to duty-free allowances between Bulgaria and Turkey covers the main limits.

The border

Kapitan Andreevo–Kapikule is an external border of the EU and Schengen area and one of the busiest crossings in Europe. Travellers are checked when leaving Bulgaria and on entering Turkey, and the same on the way back.

  • Documents: a valid passport for every traveller, or a national ID card where Turkey accepts it for your nationality. Children need their own document.
  • Visa: rules depend on nationality; confirm with the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs before travelling.
  • Entry/Exit System: as of autumn 2026, non-EU nationals are registered in the EU’s Entry/Exit System at Kapitan Andreevo, applied there since 6 January 2026 and fully operational since 10 April 2026. EU citizens are not registered.

Timing a day trip

A day trip from Plovdiv is realistic if the border cooperates. Leaving at 7:00 typically puts you in Edirne by mid-morning, with five or six hours for the mosques, the bazaar and lunch before heading back in the late afternoon.

  1. Avoid Turkish public holidays and the Friday to Sunday peaks in summer, when queues at Kapikule grow.
  2. Return before the evening rush of cars and coaches heading north towards Bulgaria.
  3. Keep receipts for larger purchases in case customs asks for them.

Friday is the main prayer day, and the large mosques are closed to visitors during the midday prayer. If the Selimiye is a priority, plan your visit for the morning or mid-afternoon.

Getting there without a car

There is no direct train from Plovdiv to Edirne. Coaches between Bulgaria and Istanbul pass close to Edirne, but they are timed for Istanbul rather than a day trip. For two or more people, a transfer from Plovdiv lets you go at your own pace, and the price is per car: Sedan for up to 4 passengers, Minivan up to 6, Van up to 8. You can book the return at the same time.

Staying overnight

If you want time for the bazaars and an evening by the river, an overnight stay in Edirne turns a rushed day into a relaxed one. Coming back mid-morning on a weekday is usually the quietest time at the border. Book the outward and return transfers separately with the dates you need.
