Kapitan Andreevo–Kapıkule is the busiest road crossing between Bulgaria and Turkey, about 20 km from Edirne. In quiet periods cars often clear both sides in 30 to 60 minutes, but on summer and holiday peaks waits of several hours are common. A private transfer from Plovdiv to Edirne via this crossing costs 170 € per vehicle.
Why this border is different
Kapitan Andreevo is an external border of both the EU and the Schengen area. Every vehicle stops twice on each side: Bulgarian passport control and customs, then Turkish passport control and customs. Lorries use separate lanes, but heavy lorry traffic can still slow the approach roads.
It is also the main route for people of Turkish origin living in Germany, Austria and elsewhere in Western Europe driving home for the summer. That seasonal flow, rather than local traffic, creates the longest queues.
| When | Typical pattern for cars | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Weekday mornings, outside summer | Short queues | The best time to cross |
| Weekends, outside summer | Moderate | Shoppers and weekend visitors to Edirne |
| Late June to mid-August | Long, especially towards Turkey | Summer migration from Western Europe |
| Late August to mid-September | Long, especially towards Bulgaria | Return journeys |
| Kurban and Ramazan Bayramı | Very long in both directions | Dates move each year with the Islamic calendar |
How to check waiting times
Waiting times change hour by hour, and no published figure stays accurate for long. Before you travel, check the current situation on the Bulgarian Border Police website, which publishes traffic information for border crossings, and the Turkish customs and trade authorities, which publish queue information for their gates. Live traffic layers on map apps also show the length of the queue on the approach road.
The Entry/Exit System
The EU’s Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, according to the European Commission. Non-EU travellers on a short stay are registered when entering or leaving the Schengen area, which on first use means fingerprints and a facial image. At a road crossing with heavy traffic this can add time at the Bulgarian booth. Our page on EES at land borders explains what to expect.
Practical tips
- Cross early on a weekday morning if you can choose.
- Avoid the first and last weekends of the European school summer holidays.
- Look up the dates of the Bayram holidays for your year before booking.
- Have passports open at the photo page and ready for every passenger.
- Know your customs allowances before you shop in Edirne; see our guide to duty-free allowances between Bulgaria and Turkey.
- Carry water and snacks in summer; queues on the approach road can be in full sun.
Alternative crossings
Lesovo–Hamzabeyli, north of Kapitan Andreevo, was built mainly for freight and can be an option when the main crossing is congested; check whether it is open to cars before relying on it. From the Black Sea coast, Malko Tarnovo–Dereköy south of Burgas is a smaller crossing on a mountain road through Strandzha.
Distances from Bulgarian cities
| From | To the border | Approx. time |
|---|---|---|
| Plovdiv | about 170 km | around 2 h |
| Sofia | about 310 km | around 3 h 30 min |
| Haskovo | about 85 km | around 1 h |

Travelling on to Istanbul
From Kapıkule, Istanbul is roughly another 250 km on Turkish motorways, about 3 hours in normal traffic before you reach the city’s own congestion. If you are flying out of Istanbul Airport, add a generous margin for the border on top of the usual airport buffer, particularly in summer. A late-evening or very early crossing usually gives the most predictable timing.
Turkey sets its own entry rules, which depend on your nationality. Some travellers need a visa or e-visa and others do not; our guide to Turkish visa rules for travellers from Bulgaria sets out where to check before you leave.
