Updated:
It depends on your nationality, not on the fact that you are coming from Bulgaria. British citizens and many EU nationals can visit Turkey for short stays without a visa, while other passports need an e-visa obtained in advance. Rules change, so check Turkey’s official e-Visa website before you leave. A private transfer from Sofia to Istanbul Airport costs 435 € per vehicle.
How Turkish entry rules work
Turkey sets visa rules by nationality. Arriving by road from Bulgaria does not change them, and Bulgarian residence does not give you a different status unless you hold Bulgarian or other EU citizenship. At the Kapıkule, Hamzabeyli or Dereköy gates, Turkish officers check your passport against the same rules as at Istanbul Airport.
| Traveller | Typical situation for a short visit | Where to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| British citizens | Visa-free for tourism and business visits, up to 90 days in 180 | UK government travel advice for Turkey |
| Bulgarian and many other EU citizens | Visa-free for short stays | Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs |
| Other nationalities | May need an e-visa before travel | Official e-Visa website (evisa.gov.tr) |
| Residents of Bulgaria with a non-EU passport | Rules of your passport apply | Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs |
Passport validity
Turkey generally expects your passport to remain valid for a set period beyond your arrival, commonly quoted as at least 150 days for visitors from the UK. Check the requirement for your nationality, and do not travel on a passport that is about to expire, even if you are only going to Edirne for the day.
Can you enter with an ID card?
Turkey accepts national ID cards from a limited list of countries. The list is set by Turkey and has changed over the years, so do not assume your ID card is enough because it works inside the EU. A passport is the safe choice for everyone, and it is the only option for British travellers, as the UK does not issue ID cards.
The e-visa, if you need one
- Apply on the official Turkish e-Visa website, not through a third-party agency that adds a fee.
- Have your passport and travel dates ready; the process is online and usually quick.
- Print the e-visa or keep it on your phone; officers at the land border may ask to see it.
- Check that the dates cover your entire stay, including the day you cross back into Bulgaria.
Coming back into Bulgaria
On your return, you re-enter the EU and Schengen area. Non-EU travellers on a short stay are recorded in the EU’s Entry/Exit System, which the European Commission says has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. EU citizens show their passport or ID card as before. You also pass Bulgarian customs, so know what you can bring back: our guide to duty-free allowances between Bulgaria and Turkey lists them.
Planning the journey
The road from Sofia to Istanbul runs along the Trakia and Maritsa motorways to Kapitan Andreevo, then on Turkish motorways via Edirne. Waiting times at the border are the least predictable part; our Kapitan Andreevo guide explains when queues are worst. For the whole route, see Sofia to Istanbul.
Checklist before you set off
- Passport valid for long enough beyond your entry date.
- Visa or e-visa if your nationality needs one.
- Children’s own passports and any consent letter needed.
- Travel insurance that covers Turkey, since it is outside the EU.
- Some Turkish lira or a card that works in Turkey for small purchases.
Information on this page reflects general rules as of autumn 2026. Visa policy can change at short notice, so confirm with the Turkish authorities shortly before travel.
