The route
From Sofia you leave north-west on the I-8 through Slivnitsa and Dragoman to the border at Kalotina. The road is two-lane and busy with lorries heading for Western Europe. On the Serbian side the A4 motorway runs from Dimitrovgrad past Pirot and Bela Palanka, then through the Sicevo gorge on a modern section of tunnels and viaducts, reaching Nis in about an hour and ten minutes.
Serbian motorways are tolled at booths. If you drive yourself, keep a payment card or some cash ready. There is no vignette in Serbia.
The border as of autumn 2026
Kalotina–Gradina is an external border of the EU and the Schengen area. All passengers are checked by Bulgarian police on exit and by Serbian police on entry. Kalotina has used the EU Entry/Exit System since it began on 12 October 2025, and the system has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. Non-EU nationals give fingerprints and a facial image on their first crossing; later crossings need only a face check. EU citizens are not registered.
- Carry a valid passport; some EU nationals can use a national ID card for Serbia. See Can you enter Serbia or North Macedonia with an ID card?
- Children need their own document and, if travelling without both parents, a notarised consent letter.
- Expect longer queues in summer and around Serbian and Bulgarian public holidays.
For a morning flight, the extra hour of margin matters more than the drive itself. Kalotina can be quick at 5:00 one day and slow the next, so build the buffer in rather than relying on a typical time.
