Nis Airport to Sofia: using cheap flights to Nis

Updated:

Nis Constantine the Great Airport (INI) to central Sofia is about 160 km via Pirot and the Gradina–Kalotina border. The drive takes around 2.5 hours plus border time, usually 15 minutes to an hour. A low-cost flight to Nis can work out cheaper than flying to Sofia, especially for a family. A private transfer from Nis to Sofia centre costs 150 € per car.

Does the Nis option save money?

Nis Airport has a mainly low-cost schedule, and some routes are not offered to Sofia or are priced differently. The saving depends on how many of you are travelling, because the transfer is priced per car while flights are priced per seat. A simple worked example:

StepWhat to compareExample for a family of four
1Total fares to Sofia, including bagsFour tickets to Sofia
2Total fares to Nis, including bagsFour tickets to Nis
3Difference between steps 1 and 2The saving on flights
4Transfer Nis to Sofia, one way150 € per car, not per person
5Extra time on the groundAbout 3 to 3.5 hours including the border

If the saving in step 3 is clearly larger than the transfer in step 4, and the extra three hours do not matter, Nis is a good choice. For a solo traveller it rarely pays; for four people sharing a Sedan, or six in a Minivan, it often does.

From the terminal to Sofia

  1. The airport lies on the western edge of Nis, a few minutes from the A4 motorway.
  2. The A4 runs east through the Sicevo gorge and past Pirot to Dimitrovgrad and the Gradina border, about 1 h 15 min.
  3. At Gradina–Kalotina you leave Serbia and enter Bulgaria and the Schengen area.
  4. From Kalotina, about 60 km on the I-8 brings you into Sofia, around 50 minutes.

The border when entering Bulgaria

Kalotina is an external Schengen border, and entering Bulgaria from Serbia means a full passport check. Non-EU nationals, including British and American travellers, are registered in the EU’s Entry/Exit System on their first entry, with fingerprints and a facial image. Kalotina has used it since 12 October 2025, and it has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. EU citizens are not registered.

Because you land in Serbia rather than in Schengen, this is where your Schengen stay begins. Visitors who need a Schengen visa must have it before arriving. For more on the system at land borders, see our Entry/Exit System guide.

Keep passports in your hand luggage, not in a suitcase in the boot. The border is only about an hour from the airport, and digging through bags in the queue slows everyone down.

Before you book

  • Check which routes Nis Airport currently serves; low-cost schedules change by season.
  • Enter your flight number and the real number of bags in the booking form, and choose a Sedan (up to 4 passengers, 4 bags), Minivan (up to 6, 6 bags) or Van (up to 8, 8 bags).
  • Add child seats or boosters for children.
  • Book the return to Nis at the same time if you are flying home from there.

Flying home from Nis

On the way back, you leave the Schengen area at Kalotina and are recorded in the Entry/Exit System on exit. Allow the drive, an hour for the border and two hours at the airport. For a midday flight from Nis, a departure from Sofia around 6:30 gives a comfortable margin.
