Skopje Airport to Sofia: route, border and timings

Updated:

Skopje International Airport to Sofia is about 230 km by road, roughly 3 h 30 min to 4 h of driving plus the Deve Bair–Gyueshevo border. The airport lies east of Skopje, so you do not need to go into the city. A private transfer from Skopje to central Sofia costs 185 € per vehicle, fixed before you book.

Why people fly into Skopje for Sofia

Skopje is sometimes cheaper, or has a more convenient flight time, than Sofia for travellers from the UK, Germany, Switzerland and elsewhere. It also suits people heading for south-western Bulgaria, such as Kyustendil or Blagoevgrad, which are closer to the Macedonian border than to Sofia. Before you book, add the road time and a border to the cost of the flight and check that the saving is real.

The route from the airport

  1. From the airport, the road heads north-east towards Kumanovo without entering Skopje.
  2. After Kumanovo the road turns east to Kriva Palanka, climbing into the hills.
  3. It reaches the Deve Bair pass and the border with Bulgaria, about 100 km from the airport.
  4. On the Bulgarian side you pass Gyueshevo and descend to Kyustendil.
  5. From Kyustendil the main road runs through Radomir and Pernik to Sofia, about 110 km.

The road on both sides is mostly single carriageway, with mountain sections near the border. In winter, snow and fog near the pass are the main reasons a 4-hour transfer becomes 5. For more on the crossing itself, see our Gyueshevo border guide.

At the border

You leave North Macedonia, which is outside the EU, and enter Bulgaria, which has been a full member of the Schengen area since 1 January 2025, as confirmed by the European Commission. That makes Gyueshevo an external Schengen border, so every passenger shows a passport or EU ID card.

Since 10 April 2026, the EU’s Entry/Exit System has been fully operational, according to the European Commission. Non-EU passengers entering Bulgaria for a short stay have their passport scanned, fingerprints and a facial image taken on their first crossing. Allow a little extra time if several people in the car are doing this for the first time.

Planning around your flight

  • Arriving late: the drive and border are fine at night, but you may prefer a hotel in Skopje and an early start.
  • Flying home from Skopje: work backwards from your flight; leave central Sofia at least 6 hours before departure to cover the road, the border and check-in.
  • Children: add a child seat or booster in the booking form and bring each child’s own passport.
  • Large luggage: enter the number of bags in the booking form so the right vehicle is assigned; a Sedan takes up to 4 bags, a Minivan up to 6 and a Van up to 8.

Going further than Sofia

Skopje Airport is also a sensible gateway for destinations in south-western Bulgaria. Kyustendil is only about an hour beyond the border, and Blagoevgrad, Bansko and the Struma valley can be reached without going through Sofia at all. Choose your actual destination when you book rather than the capital, so you are not paying for a detour.

Similar logic applies to other airports near the Bulgarian border. Compare our guides to Niš Airport to Sofia, Thessaloniki Airport to Sofia and Bucharest Airport to Sofia before deciding where to land.
