Thessaloniki Airport to Sofia: the options compared

Updated:

Thessaloniki Airport (SKG, Makedonia) to central Sofia is about 330 km, mostly motorway, with the Promachonas–Kulata crossing on the way. The drive takes around 4.5 hours in normal traffic. There is no direct public transport from the terminal to Sofia, so the alternatives involve a change in Thessaloniki. A private transfer costs 230 € per car.

Why people fly into Thessaloniki for Sofia

Thessaloniki has a wide choice of flights from the UK, Germany, Cyprus and Israel, especially in summer, and fares can be lower than to Sofia on the same dates. Some travellers also combine a few days in northern Greece with a stay in Bulgaria. The question is whether the saving on the flight covers the extra four or five hours on the ground.

The drive in practice

The airport lies south-east of Thessaloniki, so the route first skirts the city on the ring road before heading north on the A25 towards Serres and the border. After Kulata the Struma motorway leads past Sandanski, Blagoevgrad and Dupnitsa to Sofia. The only slow section is the Kresna gorge in Bulgaria, where the motorway has not yet been completed.

Greece and Bulgaria are both in the Schengen area, so as of autumn 2026 there is no routine passport check at Promachonas–Kulata. Keep your passport or ID card to hand, because random checks do happen on both sides. More on queues and timing in our Kulata–Promachonas guide.

When the transfer pays off

  1. Add up the flight price difference for everyone in your party.
  2. Compare it with the per-car transfer price, which stays the same for one or four passengers in a Sedan.
  3. Factor in arrival time: if you land after the last coach or late in the evening, a hotel night in Thessaloniki may be the real alternative to a transfer.

For a family of four, the per-car price often makes the Thessaloniki route attractive, especially with a Minivan for six bags or a Van for eight. For one person with hand luggage, the bus and coach combination is cheaper if you have the time.

What to put in the booking form

  • Your flight number, so the arrival time is clear.
  • The number of passengers and bags, so the right vehicle class is chosen: Sedan up to 4 and 4 bags, Minivan up to 6 and 6 bags, Van up to 8 and 8 bags.
  • Child seats or boosters for younger children.
  • Your exact Sofia address, so the trip ends at your door.

A late arrival is less of a problem than it sounds. Northbound traffic at Promachonas is usually light at night, and an evening landing can put you in Sofia shortly after midnight.

Heading somewhere other than Sofia?

Thessaloniki works as a gateway for the whole of south-west Bulgaria. Skiers often go straight to Bansko, which is closer to Thessaloniki than Sofia is; see Thessaloniki Airport to Bansko. For Bulgaria’s second city, read Thessaloniki to Plovdiv. And if you are comparing gateways, our Bucharest Airport to Sofia guide covers the northern alternative.
