Thessaloniki Airport to Bansko: a cross-border ski transfer

Updated:

Thessaloniki Airport to Bansko is about 230 km by road via Promachonas–Kulata, Sandanski, Simitli and the Predela pass. The drive takes around 3 to 3.5 hours in clear weather and longer after heavy snow. That is only about an hour more than from Sofia Airport. A private transfer costs 155 € per car, and you can add ski or snowboard equipment in the booking form.

Thessaloniki or Sofia: the honest comparison

Sofia Airport is the closer gateway to Bansko, at roughly 160 km. Thessaloniki becomes interesting when it offers a better flight: a direct service from your home airport, a more convenient time, or a noticeably lower fare for the whole family. The extra road time is real but modest.

The route step by step

  1. From the airport, south-east of Thessaloniki, the ring road and the A25 lead north towards Serres and the border, about 1 h 15 min.
  2. At Promachonas–Kulata both countries are in Schengen, so as of autumn 2026 there is no routine passport control. Random police checks are possible.
  3. The Struma motorway and the old road through the Kresna gorge take you north past Sandanski to Simitli, about 50 min.
  4. At Simitli you turn east and climb the Predela pass to Razlog, then continue a few kilometres to Bansko, about 45 min in good weather.

Winter roads and timing

The Predela pass is the only real mountain section, and the road is kept open through the winter. After heavy snowfall, though, the climb from Simitli can slow to a crawl behind lorries and snowploughs, and an extra hour is not unusual on the first big storm of the season.

Saturday is changeover day in Bansko, and the roads between Kulata and Razlog are busiest in the afternoon as arrivals from both Sofia and Greece converge. An early landing in Thessaloniki usually means a smoother run.

Add your skis or snowboard in the booking form, along with the real number of bags. Ski bags take up much more room than suitcases, and a Minivan or Van may be the right choice even for four people.

Documents and the border

Because Greece and Bulgaria are both inside Schengen, the Entry/Exit System does not apply on this crossing: non-EU visitors are registered when they first enter Schengen, at Thessaloniki airport. Carry your passport throughout the trip. Children need their own passport or ID card.

Who this route suits

  • Families from Cyprus, Israel and parts of the UK with better flight options into Thessaloniki.
  • Groups who share one vehicle, where the per-car price spreads across four, six or eight people.
  • Travellers combining a few days in Greece with a ski week.

The return journey

Going back, work backwards from your flight. For a departure from Thessaloniki, plan to be at the airport two hours before take-off, add the 3 to 3.5 hours of driving and then a margin of an hour for snow on the pass or traffic in the Kresna gorge. For a midday flight that means leaving Bansko around 6:00.

Book the return together with the outward trip in the same form. It saves arranging it during your holiday, and the departure time is fixed before you arrive.

If Bansko is not your final stop, see Thessaloniki Airport to Sofia or Thessaloniki to Plovdiv for other routes from the same airport.
