The form above is set to Sofia–Thessaloniki, the main route the drive to Halkidiki follows. The peninsulas add a further 60 to 140 km beyond the city, depending on where you are staying.
The route
- Sofia to Kulata on the A3 Struma motorway, with the two-lane Kresna gorge section in between, around 2 h 15 min.
- Kulata–Promachonas border, where both sides are in Schengen.
- Promachonas to Thessaloniki on the A25, around 1 h.
- The Thessaloniki ring road east past the airport, then the motorway to Nea Moudania.
- From Nea Moudania, south into Kassandra or east along the coast to Sithonia.
Summer weekends at the border
Because Bulgaria and Greece are both full Schengen members, there is no routine passport control at Kulata–Promachonas as of autumn 2026. Even so, the crossing is a bottleneck in July and August. Thousands of Bulgarian, Romanian and Serbian holidaymakers head for the same beaches on the same days, and the lanes slow down where the old border installations still narrow the road.
The worst times are typically Friday afternoon and Saturday morning southbound, and Sunday afternoon northbound. Public holidays in Bulgaria and Romania create their own peaks, notably around the start of August and mid-August.
Leave Sofia before 5:00 on a summer Saturday, or travel midweek. Starting early also means you reach Halkidiki before the afternoon heat and the queues for hotel check-in.
What to carry
- A valid passport or national ID card for every traveller, including babies. Police can still carry out random checks.
- For children travelling without both parents, a notarised consent letter from the absent parent. Our documents checklist for children explains the details.
- Cash or card for road tolls if you are driving yourself; Greek motorways are tolled at booths.
Coach or transfer?
In summer some coach companies add direct services from Sofia to the Halkidiki resorts, while others stop in Thessaloniki and leave you to make your own way on. Check the current season’s timetable with the operators. With luggage, beach equipment and children, a car with a driver from your Sofia door to the hotel is the simpler choice, and the per-car price is shared by up to four people in a Sedan, six in a Minivan or eight in a Van.
Stops on the way
On a 5 to 6 hour trip with children, one or two breaks help. Sandanski, just before the border, is a natural place to stretch your legs and eat. On the Greek side, the service areas on the A25 before Thessaloniki are convenient and avoid a detour into the city.
Going further? Compare Sofia to Kavala for Thassos and the eastern coast, or Sofia to Athens if the Peloponnese is the goal. The base route is covered in Sofia to Thessaloniki.
