Why Kulata usually wins
Kulata–Promachonas is the main road link between Bulgaria and northern Greece. From Sofia you follow the Struma motorway south, cross at Kulata and continue past Serres before turning east towards Amphipolis and Kavala. Apart from the unfinished section in the Kresna gorge, the road is fast and wide, with frequent fuel stations.
Its weakness is popularity. On Friday evenings and Saturday mornings in July and August, traffic heading for Halkidiki and Thassos meets at the same crossing, and queues can add an hour. If you can travel midweek or very early, Kulata is the clear choice. Our Kulata–Promachonas guide has more on timing.
When Ilinden–Exochi makes sense
The Ilinden–Exochi crossing opened in 2010 and links Gotse Delchev with Drama. From Sofia you leave the Struma motorway at Simitli, cross the Predela pass to Razlog and drive south through the Mesta valley. The distance is similar, but the roads are two-lane, hilly and slower.
- You are starting from Bansko, Razlog or Gotse Delchev rather than Sofia.
- It is a peak summer Saturday and Kulata is expected to be congested.
- You want a scenic drive through the Pirin and Rhodope foothills and are not in a hurry.
More detail on this crossing is in our Ilinden–Exochi guide.
Border rules as of autumn 2026
Both crossings are internal Schengen borders, so there is no routine passport control. The Entry/Exit System for non-EU travellers does not apply here because you are not entering or leaving the Schengen area. Carry a passport or national ID card in any case, as police on both sides may check identity.
Going on to Thassos
Most visitors to Thassos take the short car ferry from Keramoti, around 45 km east of Kavala, to Limenas. Ferries also sail from Kavala to Prinos on the island. Timetables change with the season, so check them with the ferry operators before you set your departure time from Sofia, and allow for queues at the port in August.
If your goal is Thassos, Kulata is still usually the faster route: Keramoti lies east of Kavala, and the motorway section past Kavala keeps the last leg quick.
Planning the timing
For a ferry to Thassos, work backwards from the sailing you want. Allow around 4.5 hours from central Sofia to Keramoti via Kulata in normal traffic, plus at least 30 minutes at the port in summer. On a Saturday in August, add another hour for the border.
For Kavala itself, a mid-morning departure from Sofia usually means arrival in the late afternoon, in time for check-in and an evening walk to the old town and the harbour. The return is easiest on a weekday; Sunday afternoon northbound queues at Promachonas are common in high season.
Travelling as a family or a group of friends, compare the per-car price with individual coach fares. A Sedan takes up to 4 passengers and 4 bags, a Minivan up to 6 with 6 bags, and a Van up to 8 with 8 bags.
