Updated:
Sofia to Athens is about 800 km by road, a drive of around 9 hours without long stops. For most people flying is the fastest option. If you prefer the ground, the practical approach is to split the trip in Thessaloniki: a private transfer from Sofia centre to Thessaloniki costs 230 € per car, and the train or a flight covers the rest.
The options compared
| Option | Door-to-door time | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct flight | Around 4 to 5 h including airports | Fastest, frequent | Baggage fees, airport transfers at both ends |
| Coach | Typically 11 h or more | Cheapest for one person | Long day or a night on the road |
| Drive the whole way | 9 to 10 h plus stops | Total flexibility | Very long for one driver; Greek motorway tolls |
| Transfer to Thessaloniki, then train | About 4.5 h plus 4 to 5 h by rail | Comfortable, scenic, a natural break | A change in Thessaloniki |
| Transfer to Thessaloniki, then fly | About 4.5 h plus 1 h flight | Short flight, more flight choice | Two legs to plan |
Flying
Direct flights between Sofia and Athens take around an hour and a half in the air. Once you add the trip to Sofia Airport, check-in, security and the ride from Athens airport into the city, the real journey is four to five hours. For one or two people with hand luggage, this is hard to beat.
Coach
Coach companies run between Sofia and Athens, often overnight, with a change of driver and several stops. It is the cheapest choice for a solo traveller with time to spare. Check the current timetable and fare on the operators’ own websites, because services change by season.
Driving all the way
The road route follows the Struma motorway to Kulata, the A25 to Thessaloniki and then the A1 motorway south past Larissa and Lamia to Athens. It is motorway for nearly all of the Greek section, with frequent toll booths. Nine hours behind the wheel is a lot for one driver, and we would not recommend it as a single stint.
The split-trip approach
Thessaloniki sits almost exactly where the drive becomes tiring. A transfer from your Sofia address to Thessaloniki takes around 4 to 4.5 hours, and from there you can continue in several ways:
- Train: Hellenic Train runs services between Thessaloniki and Athens. Check its website for the current timetable and journey times.
- Flight: Thessaloniki airport has frequent domestic flights to Athens.
- Stay a night: Thessaloniki is worth a day of its own, and the second leg feels much shorter after a rest.
This works particularly well for families and anyone with heavy bags, because the Sofia–Thessaloniki leg is door to door and the per-car price is shared by everyone in the vehicle. For more on that first leg, see Sofia to Thessaloniki.
If you split the trip in Thessaloniki and continue by train, ask to be dropped at the railway station. It lies on the western side of the city centre, close to the route in from the motorway.
Border and documents
As of autumn 2026 there is no routine passport control between Bulgaria and Greece, both being full Schengen members. Every passenger still needs a valid passport or national ID card, and police can ask for it at any point. Flights between Sofia and Athens are intra-Schengen, so there is no passport control at the airports either, but airlines check ID at boarding.
Heading for a beach on the way instead? Compare Sofia to Halkidiki and Sofia to Kavala.
