Updated:
Varna to Sofia Airport is about 450 km by road and takes around 5 h 30 min to 6 h of driving. For an international flight, leave Varna at least 9 to 10 hours before departure to cover the drive, a break, possible delays and check-in. The airport is on the eastern edge of Sofia, so you avoid the city centre. A private transfer costs 335 € per vehicle.
Why people do this drive
Varna has its own airport, but many long-haul and less common international routes start from Sofia. Travellers ending a holiday on the northern coast, or living around Varna, often find the best connection is from Sofia. A road transfer means one less flight and no risk of missing a connection.
| Option | Typical door-to-door time | Points to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer Varna – Sofia Airport | 6 – 6 h 30 min | Door to door; luggage in one vehicle; price per vehicle |
| Domestic flight Varna – Sofia, then your flight | Depends on the connection | Limited daily flights; separate tickets may not be protected |
| Connecting flight from Varna via a European hub | Varies | No long drive, but an extra connection |
| Train or coach to Sofia, then to the airport | 8 h or more | Cheapest; several changes with luggage |
Working back from your flight
The safest approach is to plan from your departure time backwards. Airlines generally recommend arriving at the airport two to three hours before an international flight; check your airline’s own advice, especially for long-haul flights.
| Step | Time to allow |
|---|---|
| Check-in and security at Sofia Airport | 2 h 30 min – 3 h before departure |
| Margin for traffic, weather or roadworks | 1 h |
| Coffee or meal break on the way | 30 min |
| Driving time Varna – Sofia Airport | 5 h 30 min – 6 h |
| Leave Varna | about 9 h 30 min – 10 h 30 min before departure |
For a 14:00 departure, that means leaving Varna at around 4:00. For an evening flight, a morning departure from Varna gives a comfortable margin.
The route
There are two main routes: west on the eastern Hemus motorway and through Veliko Tarnovo, or south to Burgas and west on the Trakia motorway. Both take a similar time. Sofia Airport lies on the eastern side of the city, so traffic in central Sofia does not usually affect you. Our guide to Trakia or Hemus explains the difference; on the day, current traffic and weather are the best guide.
Winter journeys
Between November and March, fog, snow and darkness add uncertainty to any long drive. For winter flights, add more margin, or consider travelling the day before and staying near the airport. Mountain passes such as Shipka are not on the usual routes; see Is the Shipka Pass open in winter? if you are tempted by a shortcut.
Domestic flights
Flights between Varna and Sofia exist and take about an hour in the air, but the number of daily services is limited and changes by season. If you book the domestic flight on a separate ticket from your international one, a delay can leave you without protection for the missed connection. Check the airline’s schedule and booking conditions before relying on it.
Booking the transfer
- Enter your flight number in the booking form.
- Give the exact pickup address in Varna or along the coast.
- Enter the number of passengers and bags; long-haul trips mean more luggage, so a Minivan or Van may suit better than a Sedan.
- Add child seats if needed.
- Book a return trip at the same time if you are coming back the same way.
For other long drives in Bulgaria, see Sofia to Vidin.
Leaving Varna at night is common for morning flights. If you can sleep in the car, choose a vehicle class with room to spread out; the price is per vehicle, not per seat.
