Updated:
Istanbul Airport (IST) to Plovdiv is about 410 km, nearly all on motorways via Edirne, the Kapikule–Kapitan Andreevo border and the Maritsa and Trakia motorways. Driving takes around 5 to 5.5 hours, and the border adds from 30 minutes to several hours. A private transfer from Istanbul Airport to central Plovdiv costs 420 € per car.
Why come via Istanbul?
Istanbul Airport is one of the largest hubs in the world, with direct flights from across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas. Plovdiv Airport, by contrast, has a small and mostly seasonal schedule. For long-haul travellers, a single flight to Istanbul and a road transfer can replace two flights with a tight connection in Sofia.
| Plan | Flights | Ground time | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fly to Istanbul, transfer to Plovdiv | One long-haul flight | 5 to 5.5 h plus border | Families, lots of luggage, awkward connections |
| Fly to Istanbul, connect to Sofia, then road | Two flights | Around 1.5 to 2 h from Sofia Airport | Light travellers with a good connection |
| Fly to Istanbul, connect to Plovdiv | Two flights, if a connection exists | Short | When the schedule fits |
The route
- From the airport on the northern edge of European Istanbul, the Northern Marmara motorway and connecting routes head west towards Edirne, about 230 km.
- Past Edirne, the road reaches the Kapikule border, where you leave Turkey and enter Bulgaria at Kapitan Andreevo.
- The Maritsa motorway runs north-west past Svilengrad, Harmanli and Haskovo to the junction near Chirpan.
- The Trakia motorway brings you the final 55 km or so west to Plovdiv.
Entering Bulgaria at Kapitan Andreevo
This is an external Schengen border with full checks in both directions. When you enter Bulgaria from Turkey, Bulgarian border police check every passenger’s documents, and customs may inspect luggage.
As of autumn 2026, non-EU nationals are registered in the EU’s Entry/Exit System when they enter. Bulgaria began applying it at Kapitan Andreevo on 6 January 2026, and the system has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. The first registration records fingerprints and a facial image and takes longer than later crossings. EU citizens are not registered.
- Carry a valid passport. Visitors who need a Schengen visa must have it before travelling.
- If you are arriving after a long-haul flight, keep documents at hand rather than in checked luggage.
- Know the customs allowances for alcohol and tobacco; see duty-free allowances between Bulgaria and Turkey.
Queues at Kapikule are usually longest in summer, at weekends and around Turkish and Bulgarian holidays. An early-morning landing and an immediate departure often reaches the border before the heaviest traffic.
What to put in the booking form
Enter your flight number so the arrival is clear, and give the real number of passengers and bags. A Sedan takes up to 4 passengers and 4 bags, a Minivan up to 6 and 6 bags, and a Van up to 8 and 8 bags. Add child seats or boosters as needed. If you are returning via Istanbul, book the return trip at the same time and plan to reach the airport at least three hours before your flight, with a generous border margin.
Other destinations from Istanbul
The same route serves Haskovo, Stara Zagora and the Rhodopes. For the Black Sea coast, the crossings via Malko Tarnovo are usually shorter; see Varna to Istanbul. Coming from northern Greece instead? Compare Thessaloniki to Plovdiv. For a stop in Edirne on the way, read Plovdiv to Edirne.
