Route options
| Route | Approx. distance to IST | Approx. drive time | Border | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Via Burgas and Malko Tarnovo | 430 km | 6 to 6.5 h | Malko Tarnovo–Derekoy, usually quiet | Daytime, good weather |
| Via Yambol and Lesovo | 520 km | 6.5 to 7 h | Lesovo–Hamzabeyli, heavy lorry traffic | Rarely the best choice for cars |
| Via Kapitan Andreevo | 560 km | 6.5 to 7 h | Kapitan Andreevo–Kapikule, busiest | Night journeys, winter, or when the smaller crossings are closed |
Via Burgas and Malko Tarnovo
The first 130 km follow the coast road south from Varna to Burgas. From there, a mountain road climbs into the Strandzha nature park to the border at Malko Tarnovo. On the Turkish side you drop down to Kirklareli and continue to Istanbul, reaching the airport on the city’s northern side without crossing the centre.
This is the shortest line, and the border is usually quick because few lorries use it. The trade-off is the Strandzha road: narrow, winding and slow, especially after dark or in winter. Check the crossing’s current opening hours with the Bulgarian Border Police before planning a night trip. Our Burgas to Istanbul guide describes this section in detail.
Via Kapitan Andreevo
The motorway route heads inland, joining the Trakia and Maritsa motorways towards Kapitan Andreevo, then Edirne and the Turkish motorways to Istanbul. It is longer, but the roads are fast and the crossing operates around the clock. The downside is congestion: Kapitan Andreevo–Kapikule is one of Europe’s busiest crossings, with long queues in summer and around holidays. See Kapitan Andreevo border: waiting times and tips.
Lesovo
Between the two lies Lesovo–Hamzabeyli, built mainly to take freight traffic off Kapitan Andreevo. It can be an option, but the lorry queues make it unattractive for most car journeys.
Border checks as of autumn 2026
- Every crossing into Turkey is an external EU and Schengen border, with full document checks on both sides.
- Bulgaria has applied the EU Entry/Exit System at Malko Tarnovo, Lesovo and Kapitan Andreevo since 6 January 2026, and the system has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. Non-EU nationals give fingerprints and a facial image on their first crossing; EU citizens are not registered.
- Turkish entry rules depend on nationality. See Do you need a visa for Turkey when travelling from Bulgaria?
For a morning flight from Istanbul, an overnight departure via Kapitan Andreevo is usually more reliable than the Strandzha road in the dark. For an afternoon flight, an early start via Malko Tarnovo is typically quicker.
Getting there without driving
Coaches run between Varna and Istanbul, mostly overnight. They are the cheapest option for one traveller; check current departures with the operators. For two to eight people, especially with a flight to catch, a transfer from your Varna address to the terminal is simpler. The price is per car: Sedan for up to 4 passengers and 4 bags, Minivan up to 6, Van up to 8.
Planning backwards from a flight
For a flight from Istanbul Airport, count back three hours for the airport, then the drive time for your route, then a border margin: an hour via Malko Tarnovo, two hours or more via Kapitan Andreevo in summer. For a 15:00 departure via Malko Tarnovo, that means leaving Varna at around 4:00.
