Burgas to Istanbul is about 300 km via the Malko Tarnovo–Derekoy crossing and Kirklareli, around 4.5 to 5 hours of driving. The motorway route via Kapitan Andreevo and Edirne is about 450 km and 5.5 to 6 hours, but that crossing is busier. Both are external EU borders with full checks. A private transfer from Burgas centre to Istanbul Airport costs 185 € per car.
The two routes side by side
| Via Malko Tarnovo | Via Kapitan Andreevo | |
|---|---|---|
| Approx. distance to Istanbul Airport | 300 km | 450 km |
| Approx. drive time | 4.5 to 5 h | 5.5 to 6 h |

| Road in Turkey | Kirklareli, then main roads and motorway | Edirne, then motorway |
| Traffic at the crossing | Usually light | Very heavy at peak times, including lorries |
| Best for | Most car journeys from Burgas | Night travel, bad weather, or if Malko Tarnovo is closed |
Via Malko Tarnovo
From Burgas the road heads south through Bulgarian villages into the Strandzha mountains, a protected nature park of oak forests and small ridges. It is around 60 to 70 km to the border at Malko Tarnovo, and it is not a fast road: bends, narrow sections and wildlife mean it takes over an hour.
On the Turkish side you descend through Derekoy to Kirklareli and continue towards Istanbul. For the airport on the European side, the route joins the motorway network north-west of the city, avoiding central Istanbul.
The main advantage is the border itself. Malko Tarnovo handles a fraction of the traffic at Kapitan Andreevo, so queues are usually short. Check its current opening hours with the Bulgarian Border Police before a night journey, as smaller crossings may not operate around the clock.
Via Kapitan Andreevo
The longer route uses Bulgarian motorways west and then south to Kapitan Andreevo, then Edirne and the Turkish motorways. It is the better option at night, in winter when Strandzha roads may be icy, or whenever the smaller crossing is closed. Queues at Kapitan Andreevo can be long in summer and around holidays. See Kapitan Andreevo border: waiting times and tips.
At the border as of autumn 2026
- Both crossings are external EU and Schengen borders, with full checks leaving Bulgaria and entering Turkey.
- Since 6 January 2026 Bulgaria has applied the EU Entry/Exit System at Malko Tarnovo and Kapitan Andreevo. Since 10 April 2026 it has been fully operational. Non-EU nationals are registered with fingerprints and a facial image on first entry or exit; EU citizens are not.
- Turkish entry requirements depend on nationality. See Do you need a visa for Turkey when travelling from Bulgaria?
- Customs allowances apply when you return to Bulgaria.
For a flight from Istanbul Airport, plan to arrive at the terminal at least three hours before departure. Via Malko Tarnovo, that usually means leaving Burgas 8 to 9 hours before take-off, with a border margin built in.
Who uses this route
Travellers on a Black Sea holiday who want a few days in Istanbul, people combining a long-haul flight via Istanbul with a stay on the Bulgarian coast, and residents of Burgas flying on routes that Burgas Airport does not serve. For two to eight people, the per-car price of a Sedan, Minivan or Van is shared, and the transfer goes door to door.
