Updated:
Sofia to Varna is about 440 km by the northern route and takes around 5 h 30 min to 6 h of driving in normal conditions. The southern route via the Trakia motorway and Burgas is longer, about 470 km, but often similar in time because it is motorway nearly to the coast. A private transfer from central Sofia to central Varna costs 335 € per vehicle.
The two main routes
Bulgaria has no continuous motorway from Sofia to Varna yet. The Hemus motorway, which will eventually join the two cities, is open at the western and eastern ends but not through the middle. That leaves two realistic choices.
| Route | Approx. distance | Approx. time | Road type |
|---|---|---|---|
| North: Hemus west, Veliko Tarnovo, Shumen, Hemus east | about 440 km | 5 h 30 min – 6 h | Motorway at both ends, main roads in between |
| South: Trakia motorway to Burgas, then north along the coast | about 470 km | 5 h – 5 h 30 min | Motorway to Burgas, main road to Varna |
| North via Pleven and Shumen | about 450 km | 6 h | Main roads; useful only for specific stops |
The northern route in detail
The northern line follows the Balkan range. You leave Sofia on the Hemus motorway towards Botevgrad and stay on it until the end of the western section. From there, main roads lead east via Sevlievo or Lovech to Veliko Tarnovo, then on to Shumen, where the eastern section of the Hemus takes you to Varna.
- Best for: travellers who want to stop in Veliko Tarnovo or at the Madara Rider.
- Slow parts: towns and villages on the single-carriageway middle section, and lorry traffic.
- Winter: the motorway section through the Balkan foothills near Sofia can be affected by snow, though it is a priority for clearing.

The southern route in detail
The Trakia motorway is complete from Sofia to Burgas. From Burgas, the main road north to Varna runs inland of the coast, past Aytos or along the Obzor road, depending on the choice. The total is longer, but motorway speeds make up for most of the extra distance, and summer traffic near Burgas is the main variable.

How long it really takes
Google Maps and similar tools quote around 5 to 6 hours for both routes. In practice, add a 20-30 minute break for a long drive, and consider the time of day. Leaving Sofia at 7 am on a weekday avoids the city’s morning traffic in the direction you are heading and gets you to Varna by early afternoon.
| Departure from Sofia | Expected arrival in Varna | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| 7:00 weekday | 13:00 – 13:30 | One coffee stop; quiet roads |
| 10:00 Friday in summer | 16:30 – 17:30 | Holiday traffic on both routes |
| 18:00 weekday | 00:00 – 00:30 | Quieter, but long drive in the dark |
Train, bus or flight
There are trains between Sofia and Varna, including overnight services, and coaches run frequently. Both are cheaper than a private car but slower door to door, and the train takes considerably longer than driving. Domestic flights also link Sofia and Varna. Check current timetables directly with the rail operator, coach companies and airlines.
A private transfer makes sense if you have a lot of luggage, travel as a family or group, or want to stop on the way. The price is per vehicle, so four people in a Sedan pay the same as one.
